Gretchen’s CVS Shopping Trip: Spent $6.04, Saved $43.14!

CVS Shopping Trip

I had my shopping trip all figured out, but when I went to CVS this morning, they were sold out of the 4 Jergens lotions I was going to purchase which would have generated 2 $5 ECBs. So I had to re-work my transactions while I was there in the store. I was pretty happy with how it turned out despite not being able to do the deals I had originally planned on doing.

Transaction #1

Buy $10 worth Covergirl cosmetics, Get $3 ECBs

1 Covergirl LashBlast Mascara at $8.99 – Marked 50% off ($4.50)
Used $2/1 coupon from the 4/28 P&G insert

3 Covergirl Lipslick at $6.49 – Marked 50% off ($3.25 each)
Used $3/2 coupon from the 5/12 P&G insert
And used $1/1 coupon from the 5/12 P&G insert
And used $2/$12 cosmetics CVS coupon from the coupon machine

3 Musketeers – $0.75

Total with tax (7.3%): $8.08, Used $5 gift card from Viggle (I love this app!)

Paid $3.08 out of pocket, Received $3 ECBs (for buying $10+ Covergirl) and $0.75 ECBs (for buying candy bar)

Transaction #2

2 John Frieda Hair Gel – $6.49 each
Used

And used $3.75 ECBs from Transaction #1

Total with tax (7.3%): $6.96, Used $5 gift card from Viggle

Paid $1.96 out of pocket, Received $5 ECBs

Used

And used $5 ECBs from Transaction #2

Nice! I made it out of CVS last weekend paying $0.10 and getting $18.75 ECB back – not a bad week!

  • Claudia Matei says:

Buying Clearance makeup doesn’t work at my CVS, it doesn’t generate the ECB!!

    • Sandy says:

It says it won’t work at mine either. But, perhaps I will try it now.

    • says:

I tried getting Covergirl clearance this morning from what I saw here and did not get ECBs either. Did your cashier have to issue your ECBs or did it just print out?

  • Jen says:

The JF coupon I got was for hair color. Were you able to use it on the Frizz Ease? That’s what I would prefer to buy. I don’t need the color!

    • Gretchen says:

The JF coupon I got was fo any 2 JF products. I looked like it was going to be for hair color but when I printed it, it said any product.

  • says:

Wow, I am sending a link to your post to my wife. Very cool. Great job in savings some money here.

  • Jennifer says:

How do you get multiple coupons? Do you buy numerous papers? I struggle with this. I don’t want to pay for coupons!

  • Amy says:

I had the same thoughts about the covergirl. Our stores do not generate the ECB’s on clearance products. I only know this because I purchased two products, with one not being advertised as clearance. I could use the manufacturer coupons on them, but did not earn money back. It is stated in the ad too.

  • Amanda Allsbrook says:

Do you have cable now? Does Viggle only work with cable? We just got rid of it and I haven’t used the app since we have gotten rid of it.

    • Amanda Allsbrook says:

Sorry! its your sisters trip! I understand now.

    • Gretchen says:

Actually, we don’t have cable and I don’t watch a whole lot of TV. I mainly just check into all the shows that earn me the extra points and watch the commercials on the Viggle app. It doesn’t take much time at all and doesn’t require cable but I can get at least 2 gift cards per month.

Love having CVS shopping trips and deal scenerios back on the website. Please keep them coming. Gives me deal ideas of my own.

  • Teresa M. says:

I was under the impression that extra bucks were not generated toward Clearance items (which are what the 50% and 75% off items with stickers are considered). It even states it in my weekly flyer – Does Not Apply to Clearance items.

  • Erin says:

No loss on the Jergens lotion; the 3 oz. bottles are no longer generating $5 ECBs but only $1 for buying selected “trial size products.” There’s a whole lot of it in my stores! Now I know why!

    • Tia says:

Ok this helps me because I went last time to get the Jergens after trying to find it all week and it didn’t generate the 5ecb just 1. I know other ppl got the deal early in the week. I called CVS to inquire it but she said that the 3oz was considered trail size. Looks like they updated/changed the deal midweek.

  • Tia says:

I bought over $15 worth of Cover Girl mark downed items and didn’t get an ECB. The ad says (excludes clearance items) so my purchases wouldn’t count.
